Ok, cupid….

So, maedbh7 said “hey, you should go over to OKCupid and answer a lot of questions because it would be nifty and stuff to see how it came out” and, lacking any compelling reason to tell her no, went and did so.

I should preface this by saying that I don’t take matchmaking sites at all seriously. I understand what they’re for, but I don’t at any level understand just how that’s supposed to actually work. I form attachments to people by getting to know them, and only after having gotten to know them to I really start to form serious attractions to them. While I admit to random lust from time to time, its confined to the realm of general fantasy and I don’t actually consider “going there” as a result of it.

Having said that, a lot of the questions being asked are amusing to me. Some of them are obvious personality or IQ questions, some of them are obviously “where do you fit on this political or moral spectrum”, and some are badly formed to the point of being completely unanswerable.

And then, every now and then, I find one unanswerable because it simply doesn’t consider factors that I need to know to make a desision. To wit:

Would you enjoy being tied up and having your lover write poetry on your naked back with a feather quill?
o Yes
o No

My immediate reaction to this was: “Well, that depends. How good is the poetry….?”

Here’s your sign…

Driving home from work today, I was listening to the NPR report about evacuations along the Gulf Coast in preperation for Hurricane Ivan. One of the families interviewed was indicating that they were planning to stay in their Orange Beach, Alabama, home and ride out the storm. The woman being interviewed actually said:

“Well, we thought about heading to Mobile, or maybe New Orleans, but you never know, you might end up at even more risk there.”

And I instantly thought, “I couldn’t help but noticing you seem to have more or less ignored north. I would have thought that north was a particularly promising direction to flee.”

Sheesh.

How To Stay Young

I got this in e-mail. You may have seen it before. Some of it is trite. But it’s all good advice, and I feel like pondering it awhile.

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/her.

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

…AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Amusing Moments in Gaming…

Every Thursday, I play AD&D with bedlamhouse, surrdave, and a few other folks. I keep meaning to write about those games, and even had a spiffy LJ icon set aside for it, but I never seem to.

Couple of amusing moments last night I had to share, though. We came across the high priestess of the local temple bound and gagged behind the alter of the chapel, immediately after having ransacked what we later found out was her chambers for valuables.

Don: So what you’re saying is that I see a beautiful woman tied up and gagged by the alter.

DM: Yes.

Jeff: Put her in the loot bag!!

Later in the adventure:

DM: Ok, so what is your AC without your Dex? Is it still 16?

Me (looking forlornly at my character sheet): Uhhhh, no.

Random thought

It is, perhaps, the cruelest of this life’s many injustices that idealists are forced to live in the real world.

Late Night Rambles

This week has been much quieter than the last two, which is good for my sanity. While I tend to go on vacation to try and relax, I didn’t to show up at WorldCon so frazzled I couldn’t enjoy it right away.

For those of you who keep track of these things, We’ll be arriving in Boston at about 3:30pm Thursday. I’m not sure what time we’ll actually be to the con itself, because we have plans to meet up with tigerbright when she gets off work and do a little shopping. But I will be reachable on my mobile (and so will kitanzi), so feel free to give us a call.

Speaking of my mobile, I lost it the other day, so I finally went to T-Mobile and bought a new one. I’d been wanting to get a triband phone before the next time we went to the UK anyway, and since we’ll be over there in February, now is as good at time as any. I ended up choosing the Seimans CF62T, which reviews suggested that it was very good at making phone calls and didn’t have all the extra bells and whistles that apparently mobile users demand these days, but for which I have little use for. Still working on getting all the numbers put back in it.

Today I managed to finally get the pictures from the weekends Three Weird Sisters CD Release party posted.

Had a lovely conversation on the phone with D., whose family has finally found a house in Lexington to rent, and are now in the process of trying to buy land on which to build a permenant residence. It was good to hear her voice again. I wish they didn’t live so far away.
Not much else going on.

Best. Friends. Ever.

The other thing I meant to mention when it came except the evil workplace was eating my brain is that the card from the Wedding Conspiricy came. There was a lovely bit of art from Seanan, and a list of names.

Thanks so much to Alan Thiesen, Alexa Klettner, Angie and Brittany, Blake Hodgetts, Chris Croughton, Chris Mangum, The Contabile Fortean concom, Dave Alway, Dave Weingart, Debbie Ohi, DJ Bass, Erica Neely, Greg and Maya McMullen, Gwen Knighton and Joe Raftery, Jessica Prett, Jonathan Lennox and Merav Hoffman, Joshua Kronengold, Katy Dröge, Leah Smith, Lisa Ellis, Margaret Middleton, Marilisa Valtazanou, Marion Beet, Mary Bertke, Mary Crowell, Maya Amis, Bruce Adhelsohn and family, Mia Sherman, Mich Sampson, Ny Martin, Paul Estin, Phil and Lissa Allcock, The Quinze concom, Rick Hewitt, Rika Körte, Robert and Janet Maughan, Seanan McGuire, Shaya, Sherman Dorn, Terence Chua, and Valarie Housden…

Memeage!

Comment to this entry with a post you think would be totally out of character for me – something I’d never talk about, never discuss, never say, anything. It has to be completely out of character.

Low-key Weekend

Thanks for all of the well-wishes the other day. I had quite seriously run out of cope, but it was all work-related stress which seems to have abated. This is a short week, as on Thursday we will fly to Boston for my first-ever Worldcon!

I need a new word

Did you ever watch the Smurfs as a kid? Remember how they always used some varient of the word “Smurf” as a generic adjective/adverb/verb/whatever?

Are you familiar with Murphy’s Law? Good.

I am having an absolutely murphtastic day.
