Weekend Update

Busy weekend, but very productive.

Friday night was our traditional viewing of Firefly. Another fantastic episode, making it hurt even more that Fox is taking it off the air. Joss Whedon is trying to sell the show to another network, with UPN being the most likely spot. I hope very much that UPN decides to pick it up.

Saturday morning, we got up bright and early and drove to the Forsyth County State Patrol Office to get kitanzi‘s drivers license transferred, since we’d never gotten around to it previously. When we showed up at 8:30, half an hour before the doors opened, there were already 35 people standing in line. Luckily, this particular location has a take-a-number-and-sit-in-the-waiting-room setup, so it wasn’t as bad as it might have been if yo had to stand in line the whole time. We managed to get done there at 11, just in time to drive all the way down to the airport for a GaFilk concom meeting. Had a nice lunch at the hotel, discussed many last minute con details, and left the hotel somewhere around 3pm.

Next up was shopping, to pick up some last minute gifts that needed to be mailed. I also bought the holiday cards so we could try and actually get them mailed this year BEFORE Christmas (last year, I mailed them on Dec. 27th). The mall was, as usual, crowded and insane, but we were able to get in, get what we needed, and get out without suffering major injuries.

Sunday was a nice lazy day, by contrast. We got all the cards addressed and stamped and I dropped them off at the post office, then we went grocery shopping. After dinner, we sat down and watched the episode of Firefly we had missed while I was having the surgery done back in November, since I had finally managed to download it off the internet and burn it to a VCD.

All in all, a productive weekend.

Holiday Cards

Well, I just sent out an e-mail to a bunch of folks in my address book making sure I have the right addresses to send holiday cards. If you didn’t get that e-mail, and would like to exchange addresses, drop me an e-mail with your address information, and I’ll send you ours.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful season, whatever season one celebrates!

Logistics

This morning, after the direct deposit of my paycheck dropped into the bank, I went to http://www.delta.com/ and pushed the “please drain my bank account” button.

kitanzi and I now have airline tickets to Quinze.

Thanksgiving Weekend

kitanzi and I had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend, spent with friends and family.

On Thursday, we went over to telynor‘s house for Thanksgiving Day dinner. I’ve spent the last 2 or 3 T-day’s at her house, and it is always a good time. This year was no exception. Along for the ride were, of course, Harper’s son, G, duality and her FPW, Ed and MEW and their two kids, T and his new FPW, and another person I don’t think I’d met before. We sat around and caught up with Ed and MEW and played with the kids and then had another Thanksgiving dinner that couldn’t be beat. We ended up leaving about 7pm because I was feeling rather tired, plus I’d been paged to deal with a work situation earlier in the day and said I’d take care of it when I got home.

Friday morning, I had to go into work for a few hours, as the problem the night before was bigger than I could easily fix that night. Was able to get everything taken care of in short order, though, and headed home to help get things in order before our guest arrived. I had not had the opportunity before now to meet kitanzi‘s mom, and she turned out to be an exceptionally neat person. We exchanged Christmas gifts on Friday, since we won’t see her again before next year at the earliest.

Saturday morning, Kit’s mom declared an interest in doing something touristy, so we discussed various possibilities before finally settling on heading up to New Echota State Park. New Echota was the capital of the Cherokee Nation before the US and Georgia governments forced them off their land. Many of the buildings from that town have been restored or recreated to give a real feel for what it must have been like to live there. And it was a gorgeous Georgia day, with temperatures up around 60 and a bright sun shining, so it was fun just to walk around and look at things.

We came home and had a late lunch, then listened to A Prairie Home Companion on the radio. When it went off, we popped in the DVD of Ocean’s Eleven, which kitanzi and I had both seen, but Kit’s mom had not.

Sunday, we decided to find some entertainment a little closer to home, and so went out to see the new Harry Potter film. I found it enjoyable, though I think I enjoyed the first movie a bit more. I don’t think it’s because the new movie wasn’t as good, though. Perhaps partly because I hadn’t read the books yet when I saw the first film, and partly because this one is much more plot-driven than the first was. Still, well worthwhile, and I’ll look forward to seeing it again when the DVD is released.

This morning was back to work, and kitanzi‘s mom headed back home to Little Rock. All in all, it was a wonderful thanksgiving weekend.

Surfacing…

Apologies to everyone who I promised updates here, but haven’t. I’ve not been able to hold on to focus for more than a short period over the last few days, as I recover from the surgery.

The surgery itself went very well. Lots of worry and fret melted away in seconds when the anesthesia hit, and the next thing I knew I was waking up and sore and groggy and it was all done. Still too early to know if it’s a total success, but it’s at least a big improvement, and I’m hopeful that once I’m fully recovered this is going to be filed under ‘one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself.’

Keeping this short, since I’m still on medications and not thinking in very straight lines much of the time, but I did want to thank a few wonderful people from the last week:

o hilfy, who came to pick me up from the hospital, and stayed with me for four hours longer than expected after I was held over concerns about my blood pressure.

o Paul, for calling kitanzi and keeping her from going too crazy while she was waiting for me to come home from the hospital

o telynor for dropping everything on a moments notice to come pick me up and drive me down to the doctor’s office Tuesday morning after I had some concerns about things related to my recovery.

o kyttn for the lovely afghan which arrived in the mail yesterday, in our favourite colours no less!

o Every single person on #filkhaven and JediMUD, and here on LiveJournal and all the crew at work, for all their worries and well wishes and virtual hugs and get well thoughts.

o Callie, for the unexpected phone call and notes-comparing to her own similar surgery and recovery.

o And of course, kitanzi, for all her love and patience and attention, and for making my life complete.

*hugs*

Coming soon…

I still owe an OVFF report (Come to think of it, I never actually got around to one last year. This year shall be different.)

It will have to wait just a bit more however. In about 45 minutes, I will be driven down to Northside Hospital in Atlanta to undergo sinus surgery. I’ve been suffering from sinus problems for at least 4 years, and to be honest, I can’t actually remember the last time I breathed properly, so I have understandably mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, i’m not really looking forward to the actual procedure and the recovery time, but if it works, It’ll all be worth it.

So watch this space for updates, which I will either post or have kitanzi post for me, and I’ll get that OVFF report done next week.

Maybe in my extra spare time, I’ll reach back and write up my trip to Boston back in May that I promised details on but never wrote.

*hugs to everyone*

It was a year ago, almost to this minute.

It was the culmination of a dizzying weekend. You found out how I felt about you, and I found out how you felt about me. Suddenly, everything shifted into focus.

From Thursday night, snuggled up on the couch and surrounded by our friends, until that moment on Sunday afternoon, when we kissed for the first time (after I nervously asked “May I…”), I felt as if the entire weight of the world was lifted away from me.

That was the day I stopped drifting aimlessly. That was the day I made contact with something real and solid and worthwhile.

Since that day, we’ve gone through a lot of ups and downs. Long separations and too-short weekends. Talking on the phone late at night until we couldn’t keep our eyes open. Counting down the days between the time you decided to until you finally packed up and moved here so we could be together always.

One year ago, the most wonderful year of my life to date officially began. And I’m looking forward to sharing all the rest of my years with you, from now until the end of time.

Always and forever, I love you.

Happy anniversary.

Weekend Update

I was gently chided recently by one of my friends for not posting enough about what’s going on with me lately. She pointed out, quite sensibly, that one can’t always assume that no news is good news, since I often went silent when I was dealing with lots of adversity. So this is an attempt at reporting what’s been going on, and those who don’t care to read such things will probably want to skip ahead to other items on their friends list, one of which is probably a good bit with links in it.

Friday:
Friday night has become a TV night for kitanzi and me, as we snuggle up to watch Joss Whedon’s new series, Firefly, which is a nifty SF/Western with interesting characters. It’s not perfect, but it’s always intriguing, and gets lots of little things right. Rumours of the shows death have been hovering over its head since it premiered, so I hope this one isn’t going to turn into another show I really like that disappears after half a season. I intend to enjoy it as long as it runs, though.

Saturday:
kitanzi had been planning on going to my coworker Aileen’s baby shower, but she’d been feeling under the weather all week, so she elected to stay home rather than go and expose people to whatever bug she’d picked up. We did light housework, went and got haircuts (needed, since OVFF is coming up soon and we’re not going to be home next weekend), then came home and spent the evening watching the DVD of Beauty and the Beast, which I had picked up a few days ago but not had a chance to sit and watch yet. It was a lot of fun watching this movie again after so many years. The special features, with all the behind the scenes footage, was also a lot of fun to watch.

Sunday:
Sunday we got up early and went grocery shopping, then came home and finished up with the housework before sitting down and watching four hours of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season One DVD, also a recent acquisition. I hadn’t seen a lot of these episodes in a LONG time, and at least one of them had managed never to see at all, so this was even more fun.

So lets see, the weekend consisted of getting haircuts, watching TV, and housework. (And snuggling, of course). A thoroughly boring, unexciting weekend at home.

Life is wonderful. 🙂

*sigh*

Cthulhu says…

In discussion last night about the “God says…” billboards, we came up with the notion of a “Cthulhu says…” billboard campagin. Among the suggestions:

“Got ketchup?” –Cthulhu

“I save. I may want a midnight snack.” –Cthulhu

“Have you read my book? Big mistake, bub.” –Cthulhu

“What part of ‘I would run if I were you’ did you not understand?” –Cthulhu

“Big Bang? No, Big Buffet…”

Feel free to add your own. 🙂
