..(BOOM! CRASH!)
S.M. Stirling
We are oh so very bouncy bouncy happy over the opportunity to have sf, alternate history and fantasy author Steve Stirling join us at GAFilk this year. Steve has been including filk music in his national best-selling books for many years. The character of Juniper Mackenzie is patterned closely on the singer/songwriter Heather Alexander, and many of her fine songs appear in all three of the “Dies the Fire” stories. Stirling’s adventurous, conflict-driven novels often describe military situations and militaristic cultures and explore societies with cultural values significantly different from modern western views. One of his recurring topics is the influence of the culture on an individual’s outlook and values, and the different constructions of morality. The “Dies the Fire” saga picks up 22 years following the “Change” of the world as we know it in the soon to be released “The Sunrise Lands.” Steve’ most recent release is the sf novel “The Sky People” in the Lords of Creation Series. He’s a prolific storyteller with over 21 short stories and novellas, as well as 62 novels spread out over the following series:
The Draka Series
The Island in the Sea of Time Series
The General Raj Whitehall Series (with David Drake)
The Fifth Millenium Series (with Shirley Meier and Karen Wehrstein) The
Peshawar Lancers
Conquistador
The Dies the Fire Series
The Lords of Creation Series
Codominium World/Empire of Man Universe (with Jerry Pournelle, Judith Tarr, Harry Turtledove, Susan Shwartz)
Flight Engineer Series (with James Doohan)
Man/Kzin War Series (with Larry Nivan, Jerry Pournelle and Dean Ing)
“The Lament” in Magic: The Gathering: Tapestries
Babylon 5: Book 6: Betrayals
T2: Infiltrator
T2: Rising Storm
T2: The Future War
The Ship Who Sang Universe (with Anne McCaffrey)
The Rose Sea (with Holly Lisle)
The Riftwar Collaboration (with Raymond Feist)
Not only does Steve appreciate, listen to, and promote filk music in his work, he’s willing to consider any songs written in his “Dies the Fire” universe for inclusion in the upcoming “Sunrise Lands” books. There’s even been some discussion of putting actual tunes in the backs of the books. Now THAT should make some filkers’ ears perk right up.
Steve is an amenable fellow who has had a longstanding friendship with GAFilk’s other filk-friendly author, Tanya Huff. We’re hoping to talk him into reading from some of his upcoming publications. We’re also very happy to welcome Steve’s wife Jan to GAFilk this year and we’re looking forward to a great time.
Well, as the days grow shorter, it can only mean one thing: Gafilk is coming!
This year’s Georgia Filk Convention will be held 5-7 January 2006 at the Holiday Inn Airport North in Atlanta, GA,
We’ll be jamming in the International Ballroom this year with an array of fantastic guests from around the world. From Canada, Urban Tapestry is our Guest of Honour. Our Toastmistress is the legendary Linda Melnick, and our Interfilk guest is none other than Germany’s Summer & Fall. In addition, we have yet another exciting Super Secret Guest. If that wasn’t enough, all these people will be there too!
The Pre-registration period for Gafilk will end on Nov 30, so send in your membership now before the prices increase. We’re going to have concerts, “My Filk”, theme circles, and of course, the best open filk in town, with plenty of space in the hallways if you don’t like the rooms. Don’t forget to also get a ticket to our banquet, so you can dance the night away with Play It With Moxie, the Gafilk House Band!
Of all the filk cons to be held in 2007, this will be the first. Don’t miss it!
This was too cute not to share. My dear friend (WINOLJ) Dina’s son Connor was just overheard in the other room, singing:
You can’t be mean to your sister,
even if you’re a pirate,
you can’t hurt her ears or hit her with sticks
and you can’t annoy her just to annoy her,
because my mommy said so,
she said be nice to your sister,
and even pirates have to be nice to sisters
I think that’s a good song for today.
cadhla points to the anonymous love meme over in queenofthorns‘s journal. So I went and signed up, because everyone needs a little love. Even me. 🙂

Some of you may know cjdoyle as the guy who did the incredible Serenity model out of LEGO™ blocks. I think of him mostly as one of my sweetie aiela‘s friends. Regardless, he’s a nice guy and I’m glad to know him.
So last night, I’m chatting with aiela on IM, and she says, “Did you see the card cjdoyle did of you?” One of cjdoyle‘s current LEGO projects is “The Brick Tarot“, a tarot set using LEGO models. Apparently, I had missed his most recent post, so aiela helpfully gave me the link to
Wow. I’m seldom left speechless, but…..wow.
Thanks, Chris!
Go check out the rest of the stuff on his site. He’s done a lot of amazing stuff with plastic bricks!
Since the message hasn’t gotten out to everyone yet, just a reminder about alternate addresses to reach filknet.org’s IRC server and the #filkhaven channel:
irc.gafilk.org
dorian.altrion.org
These are the US and UK servers, respectively, and connect on the same standard ports.
We are having continuing problems with our Registrar, which is why our DNS is not resolving properly. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Today is the day we in the US exercise our civic responsibility to go and vote. If you haven’t already, please make the time to do so.
I actually requested and mailed an absentee ballot, so my vote is already taken care of, which is good because today has shaped up to be utterly sucktastic. So far this morning:
-couldn’t find my keys, which turned out to be in my jacket pocket.
-finally got out the door, got the to gas station, couldn’t find credit card
-drove home, couldn’t find card, eventually discovered it in my wallet (?!?)
-noticed on way back out the door giant bolt embedded in tire
-got gas, got to work 20 minutes late.
-will have flat tire by lunchtime, no doubt.
-no idea about lunch now, since plan had been to go home. kitanzi is going to bring me lunch. I have the best wife ever.
Hope your day is going better. And if you’re in the United States, go vote. It’s important.
Good lord, I watched a lot of lousy television as a child.
