30 Day Song Challenge – Day 24 – A Song By A Band You Wish Were Still Together

Today’s challenge invites us to share a song from a band we wish were still together. I don’t recall who it was who first introduced me to Great Big Sea; I think it was Seanan McGuire. But once I found them, I fell in love with their whole sound, and got to see them live four times. They always put on an amazing show, and I’m sorry that I won’t get to see them again, unless they decide to get back together.

So here’s Great Big Sea, with one of my favourite songs of theirs, “Boston and St. John”.

So…they’ve never really stopped being together, but my favorite member is no longer with them, and they took a 17 year hiatus while they raised their kids. So, I’m counting. Rumor has it, they are working on a new album!

For me, the band I wish I saw when they were still together is Supertramp. There’s no chance of Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson patching up their differences and getting back together. Ever. Too much water under the bridge, as it were. John C. Helliwell was one of my inspirations for being an all-around reedman — flute, clarinet, saxophone. Here’s the first Supertramp song I ever heard, back in March of 1975.

I like “Boston and St John’s” a lot. It was written by Alan Doyle so it’s possible he’ll keep performing it. On the album recording I like the back-up vocal (Séan McCann, probably), too.

One of my greatest regrets is that I never got to see Keith Moon live. 🙁

Another band that has gone through lineup changes due to the death of an original member.

I love that song. It has some personal history for me.

Dandelion Wine got to open for them back in their earlier days and they were an awesome group. Two of the members Alan Doyle and Sean McCann are now solo touring separately and are really good.
