The Burdens That We Carry

Just some musing after a conversation I had with a friend.

Several years ago, at one of the last Magic Carpet Cons in Chatanooga, I was having a conversation with Dr. Jane Robinson. It was Sunday morning, and I had already checked out of my hotel room and packed everything into the car with the exception of my laptop computer, which I didn’t trust to leave unattended for several hours, so I had it in a carry case slung over my shoulder.

As is usual on a Sunday at a con, I was slightly sleep deprived and a little stiff. At one point, I flexed my back to try and work out a particular knot of soreness between my shoulders.

“What’s wrong?” Dr. Jane asked. “Oh, just a little stiff. And this thing is heavy,” I replied, nodding toward the laptop case.

She nodded sensibly. “Then put it down.”

This had not actually occured to me. I set the case down in front of me, where I could keep an eye on it. “There,” she smiled broadly. “Now don’t you feel better?”

All of us, every day, have burdens that we are carrying. And there are times that we feel weary from them, or overwhelmed by them. Sometimes we wish we could just rest.

Put them down.

You can’t just abandon them, no. But put them down. Set them on the ground. Sit on top of them. Catch your breath, feel the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. Stretch, relax, and breathe.

They will be waiting for you when it is time to pick them up again and continue down the road. And your steps will be lighter from the respite.

*sigh*

Well, my appointment with the allergist finally came today. I went in this morning to be prodded with needles.

A Moving Experience

I awoke this morning to a series of IMs from my oldest friend, Jeff, who took advantage of the fact that I forgot to log out of AIM to complain about the fact that after much pestering, he finally started reading my journal on a regular basis, only to find that I haven’t been updating it on a regular basis. Well, it’s a fair cop, and I should write more often, so let’s start with the most recent weekend…

Birthday Musings

First up, Happy Birthday to jhitchin (today), Don (6/27), djbp and mokatiki (6/29).

Second, thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes yesterday. Despite having to work (with a server down in the morning and an important meeting in the afternoon, I couldn’t take the day off), I had a good day. kitanzi and I went out for dinner, then came home to watch TV and cuddle. I got a phone call from my mom, and called and made a phone date to talk to someone else tonight, and then went to bed early. 🙂

I often get amused at looking at what other things happened on my birthday, so I went and looked a few of them up. Some I was aware of, and some I wasn’t, but here’s a run down of the more interesting things:

  • June 25th is the birthday of Eric Blair, better known to the world as Animal Farm author George Orwell. 2003 was his 100th Birthday, in fact. It’s interesting to see that nearly 20 years after the events of his seminal work 1984, our government is still actively exploring the type of future he envisioned.
  • June 25th is also the Birthday of Lord Louis Mountbatten, Broadway directory George Abbott, King Crimson guitarist Ian McDonald,
  • On this day in 1967, the Beatles recorded the song All You Need Is Love in front of 400 million people during a worldwide television broadcast. This was one I hadn’t known about, and I think it’s really, really cool.
  • In 841, Charles the Bald and Louis the German defeated Lothar at Fontenay. (I have no idea what this is about, but it just sounds cool – reminds me of the Star Trek episode Dharmok)
  • On this day in 1178, five monks reported seeing something explode on the moon. (I had nothing to do with it. I was elsewhere at the time, and there are witnesses to prove that.)
  • On this day in 1638, a lunar eclipse occurred, the first astronomical event recorded in America. (Again, I had nothing to do with it.)
  • In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea, beginning the Korean War. (No really, I was at lunch with my girlfriend. I was nowhere near Asia.)
  • In 1951, the first commercial color TV program was a show presented on CBS using the FCC-approved CBS Color System. The public did not own color TV’s at the time.
  • In 1966, the tv show Dark Shadows premiered on ABC.
  • In 1989, 1st US postmark dedicated to Lesbian & Gay Pride (Stonewall, NYC) is issued.
  • In 1993, Canada elected Kim Campbell as its first woman prime minister. (I know nothing about her politics or how good a job she did, but I’m impressed she was elected.)
  • And finally, June 25th marks the anniversary of the passage of 1910’s Mann Act. From this day forth, I will encourage every one to celebrate my birthday by transporting a girl across state lines for immoral purposes.

Amusing conversation

Just now, talking to my co-worker eloren:

Me: Great. Now the CD-ROM drive isn’t working.

(ACat begins removing the case of the server he’d just put the case back onto.

Me: So, what cardinal rule did I just break, regarding working on a server that you have had to remove the case?

eloren: Don’t ever put the case back on until you’re sure it’s in working order?

Me: Right. See, I like to lead by example. This is an example of something not to do. 🙂

For anyone who is wondering, I am still planning on answering the last set of questions, and also write up the last two weekends. I could say I’ve been busy at work, but eloren knows better than that, so I’ll just admit I’ve been lazy and procrastinating. (That goes for those of you I owe e-mail to as well. Bad me.)
