Captain Quirk

I’ve seen this one go around in various forms, but I don’t recall ever being tagged on it. Since aiela so nicely did tag me this time, I figure I’ll give it a whirl.

The rules!

1. Link to the person that tagged you.
2. Mention the rules in your blog.
3. Tell 6 unspectacular quirks of yours.
4. Tag 6 following bloggers by linking to them.

  1. Despite being very disorganized usually, I have a compulsive desire for things to be properly catalogued and arranged on the shelf. I once spent an entire evening at telynor‘s house methodically alphabetizing her CD collection by artist, because it was annoying me that they weren’t.
  2. Despite the above, I haven’t done so on my own CDs since moving over a year ago. It is entirely possible this is because all the CDs are ripped to mp3. (The books still need to be properly alphabetized as well.)
  3. While I have a very outgoing public personality, I’m actually quite shy and introverted. Most people don’t believe me when I tell them this.
  4. I appear to be completely incapable of starting a relationship that isn’t long-distance. The last time I started a non-long-distance relationship was in 1989, when I was in college.
  5. I can, and frequently will, pick up small objects with my toes. (I’m not sure this is really all that unusual, except that several people have expressed small amazement upon seeing me do it. Or was that small amusement? But, I digress…)
  6. By the time I was 19 years old, I had held paying government jobs at the county, state, and federal levels.

I think I shall not tag anyone. Well, maybe I’ll tag …. Nah, too much pressure. No tagging. Do it if you wanna, and I’ll enjoy reading it.

  1. 1 -- reminds me of an expert from a Lucifer comic…

    “Helga, what are you doing?”
“Organizing the history books, like you asked.”
    “They were fine before!”
“But putting them in chronological order makes much more sense!”
“Yeah…but not by publication date. That’s just surreal.”

    • Oddly, I can actually see the reason for organizing the history books by publication date -- if you are a historiographer (and, honestly even if you aren’t), it’s important to know how history has ‘changed’ over the years. History books now say some very different things about past eras and events than history books did when I was a child or when my parents were in high school or when my grandparents were in high school. Sometimes I think you can tell as much or more about current society by studying what they say about the past than you can tell by what they say about themselves.

  2. 5. I can (and do, when appropriate) pick up dimes on carpet and nickels on smooth floors.

  3. No.5: I used to be able to do this and did so a lot, but I’ve got a bit stiff (back and knees) lately. I still use my toes to pull shoes off, or towards me ready to put on, or to snag things and drag them nearer and so on. Back when I was a Girl Guide (in the 1960s), they brought out a new handbook, with exercises which one was supposed to work through on one’s own. I glanced through, and found that one of them was “Tie a knot in a piece of string, using only your toes.” Dead easy for me, once I’d found a position where I could support myself comfortably and still see what I was doing and get the right leverage on things.

  4. I could ditto your number 3… except for the first bit (prior to the comma).

    • I think it’s the disconnect between what people perceive and what’s really there that makes it a quirk, in my mind. 🙂
