Home of the Autographed Cat

I hate to say goodbye

Last night I got a head start on the traditional post-con melancholy, but I had a fantastic weekend at OVFF.  Currently sitting at the airport waiting for our flight, for which we arrived insanely early (also traditional, but once we were both awake there was no real point in hanging out — cadhla and sweetmusic_27 were both asleep still, and there was no one in the lobby, so we just came on out to the airport, dropped off the car, got through security and found some breakfast.  We should arrive in Atlanta sometime around noon, so we should be home by 2pm or so.

More later.  I love you all.

It’s all how you look at it…

It’s been many years since i read the comic strip Broom Hilda, though I remember having a couple of paperback collections of it when I was a kid. I honestly forget that it’s still around.

Someone on rec.arts.comics.strips linked to this one, though, and I just had to share it.

“Broom Hilda” by Russell Myers

“Sometimes the burdens that we carry
Are the blessings we forgot
And I’ve learned a lot about the difference in the two
It’s in the point of view
That you’ve got”

Weekend Update: alt.polycon

Periodically (currently, about once every nine months), readers of the newsgroup alt.polyamory have a little convention to meet up in real space and hang out, socialize, and generally be among themselves. The organization of these conventions is ad-hoc and the location moves around, so it’s generally depending on someone to step up and say “I’ll do it.”

Some months ago, someone said “We should have one in the Southeast. Maybe in Atlanta!” and I, with a foolish lack of thought, said “If you want to do that, I know a hotel.”

The person who made the original proposal disappeared into the ether, and it all might have ended there, until Aahz pings me and says “Are you still thinking of running APC 17 in Atlanta?” Showing the amazing lack of self-preservation instinct that got me on Gafilk’s concom in the first place, I said “Could do.” Fortunately, other crazy people stepped forward to help me organize things, most notably the lovely okoshun, without whom I’m reasonably certain I’d have never gotten anything done.

This past weekend was the actual event, and while it was sparsely attended (lousy economy), it was a tremendous amount of fun. There was much socializing, and much interesting conversation, it was tremendous fun to finally meet several people that I’d only previously known online. There was a great deal of relationship geeking (as you’d expect at the programming of a convention themed around polyamory), and the traditional decadent brunch, which I’m assured was up to the standards expected by the regulars. (Those of you who were at Gafilk’s banquet this past year will know the quality of the food I’m talking about. I used the same hotel.)

So here’s to new friends and old, and a lovely social weekend filled with food for both thought and belly.

MEME: You keep quoting that film…

Seen everywhere.

When you see this, post in your own journal with your favorite quote from The Princess Bride. Preferably not “As you wish” or the Inigo Montoya speech.

Westley: There’s a shortage of perfect breasts in the world. It would be a pity to damage yours.

Meme: Photo time…

Post a picture in the comments of what you think describes me when you think about what/who I am. Give no written explanation though. Just an image.

(Optional) Copy and paste into your own journal and see what others think about you in pictures.

Cool story of the day

I picked up the link for this story from amacker‘s mailing list. What a cool idea!

Mad Max Meets Cannonball Run in Alt-Fuel Race to Vegas

Wayne Keith is headed to Las Vegas in an old Dodge pickup that runs on, of all things, wood. He gets about 1.6 mpp (that’s miles per pound) and reckons he needs about 1,000 pounds to get there. No problem. He’s carrying a chainsaw and a list of lumberyards along the way.

Such are the provisions you need for Escape from Berkeley, a madcap alt-fuel race that mashes up Mad Max and Cannonball Run with a touch of the Darpa Challenge and Burning Man. If the rules are simple — no petroleum allowed, and fuel must be scavenged along the way — the challenge is anything but.

“The basic premise is build a vehicle out of junk, we’ll give you the equivalent of one gallon of gas and you have to drive 600 miles to Las Vegas. Oh, and you can’t buy any fuel along the way,” says Jim Mason, the artist and inventor behind the race. “That’s a pretty heavy stone to carry.”

That isn’t keeping the 10 teams lining up for this weekend’s race from giving it a try in everything from a veggie-oil Lotus 7 to a steam-powered three-wheeler that looks like it rolled right out of the 19th century.

Read the whole story. It’s pretty fabulous.

WoW: Old Fashioned Instances

Among the many things that really sucked about bedlamhouse moving to Indiana was no longer being able to game with him every week. The D&D campaign soldiered on without him, but I really missed his presence at the table. I’m pretty sure he missed us too, because when the D&D group decided to shift from weekly to irregular status, he suggested that perhaps we could set up an MMO night so he could get in on some gaming fun.

First things first

Taken from just about everyone.

Movie Night

Just a reminder that it’s the first of the month, and that means movie night! Due to some changes in schedules, we’re moving movie night from Wednesday to Thursday. So don’t show up tonight, because there’s no movie tonight. The movie is tomorrow night. There will be popcorn. Maybe baked goods. And good company. And a movie.

Movie night is Thursday, October 2nd. See you then!

Update on Bizarro Library saga

Thanks to everyone who commented on this post.. My friend read them all and wishes me to thank you all. She’s very grateful for all your concern, support, and suggestions, and when she was feeling overwhelmed, she’d come back and reread your comments and take strength from them.

After the stress finally became enough to make her physically ill yesterday, she took a sick day to consider her options, and had a long talk with Boss. The end result of which is that she plans on tendering her two-week notice today, and begin looking for employment elsewhere.

It’s a big, scary thing to do, but I think that it will ultimately be the best for her. I’m glad she’s going to soon have this madness behind her.
