Injury Update

I ended up taking the day off yesterday and today, and called yesterday to get an appointment with the doctor just to make sure I didn’t cause myself any more serious damage than my wounded dignity. They didn’t have an appointments available yesterday, but I was able to get one for 9:30am this morning. I spent most of yesterday wandering from the computer to bed to the couch, because being in any one place for very long (or indeed, in any one position) was rather painful, and what painkillers I had on hand just weren’t cutting it. I did have some leftover diclofenac sodium left over from my back problems last summer, so I was taking those along with Tylenol for pain as often as allowed.

Drove down the doctor’s this morning, and was seen fairly promptly. I had an appointment with the same nurse practitioner that has been managing my blood pressure and blood sugar issues; I actually think of her more as my primary doctor than my actual PCP. (In fact, I have to call my insurance company to select a new PCP, as Dr. K. has left the practice. They told me this when I was checking in, and I realized that this really wasn’t a bother, since in the 7-8 years he’s been my PCP, I’ve only seen him about 5 times. But I digress…).

After getting the blood pressure and temperature readings out of the way, she prodded and poked and moved me about to see where the pain reactions where. Luckily, I don’t have the kind of radiating pain down my limbs that she was worried about. She wrote me out some prescriptions for pain medication, and sent me next door for X-rays. This was, oddly enough, the biggest bother, since taking them involved lying on my back and being rolled this way and that. I hadn’t had any pain meds this morning, so I was pretty sore and annoyed by the time they were done, but not so much at them (they were very personable and kept the amount of prodding to a minimum, and what prodding they did needed to be done). He told me that I’d find out about the results probably tomorrow.

I went by the pharmacy to fill my scrips, stopped by Moe’s for some lunch, then came home, took the pills and ate. I watched a little TV, but when I realized I was actually not listening to Matt Groening talk about….whatever he was talking about on the Daily Show episode I was watching, I took the cue from my body and went to bed. I slept until kitanzi came home and got me up for dinner. We watched the Dustin Hoffman episode of Inside the Actors Studio, which was amazing, and then I played a bit of WoW to pass time until I could take another dose of meds and go to bed. Which I am now going to do.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the previous post and offered their well wishes and support. It means a lot to me to know that you’re all out there paying attention and caring.

  1. Ooh, I feel your X-ray pain. Or well, I feel mine, and I assume yours isn’t any more fun. 🙂 X-ray technicians must have a high rate of burnout, having to put people in hurt-y positions all day long.

Here’s hoping nothing’s broken! You show that hill it ain’t the boss of you!

    • Yeah, they kept apologizing to me every time I’d visibly show pain, and I kept saying “No, no, it’s ok. You gotta do what you gotta do.”

As for that hill not being the boss of me….it can’t fire me — I quit! 😉 Seriously, i think I’m going to find an alternate route for walking to work. I did see what looks like a gentler path a bit further up the road, so that might work for a cut-through. If not, I can always walk around. 🙂

  2. Ow! I’m glad you’re being seen and x-rayed and getting meds. I hope they can solve things soon and easily.

    • Thanks. The NP said if it’s a bone bruise, it might take a while to heal, but it will given time and not stressing it overmuch. We’ll see how it goes.

      • Oh good. Because having an ongoing pain in the tush would be totally inappropriate for you -- it’s so much the opposite of what you are!

  3. I’m glad you got in to see the doctor/medical professional and hope it turns out to not be anything serious.

I’m even gladder that you got something to help with the pain. I very rarely follow up on stuff like that, but it is smart to do so!

    • Well, given that the strongest pain meds I had in the house weren’t cutting it, it seemed the prudent thing to do. Apparently, while I value being clearheaded, I value being pain-free over being clearheaded.

  4. Eek! I missed this in the moving mania of yesterday. *gentle hug* I hope you feel better soon.

  5. Hey, so I’m curious, what *is* Dustin Hoffman’s favorite curse word? 🙂

Good on’ya, listening to us and your bod. Get better…. and hope nothing’s busted. That would, like, *suck*.

  6. Oh blast. We can apply for Olympia -- synchronised lumbago. :o)

I’m not that bad this time, though -- but I remember that one time when it was so bad I couldn’t even walk and they x-rayed me and it was just as you wrote, fucking torture.

Still, they would only give me diclofenac pills. So that’s what I did this time, too, without consulting a doctor, because both my GP and the specialist were on holidays and if you know they wouldn’t DO anything anyway you don’t look for some stranger to poke you around.

All that was included in the short German sentence “gestern Harry Potter, heute Hexenschuss” on Monday -- “Hexenschuss”, i.e. “witch shot” is what we call this condition, if your back muscles pinch a nerve.

All I have now, thanks to time, warmth and diclofenac, is a bit of a pain in the arse -- literally.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the x-rays will show that you, too, only have a Hexenschuss, not a dislocated disc.

  7. *huggledyhuggledy love*

  8. Yikes! I’m so sorry you’re still hurting this bad. :/

  9. Glad to hear you’re feeling better after the doc’s treatment. Keep us posted.

    • As I get new info, I will. Back at work today, at least, though I’m a little fuzzy headed from the pain meds.

  10. Play more WoW … that always makes ME feel better. Hope your up and about soon

    • Heh. If you ever find yourself on The Venture Co. realm, drop a line to Pryderi. Just hit 57 last night. 🙂

  11. I’m absolutely sure coming to the filk will make you feel better. 😉

*hug* glad you got some medical attention.

  12. Brain Weasel Stomping Day

I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate everything you’ve done for Angie over the last dozen years. There’s no one I trust more to take care of her, and I’m glad you accepted me to be good enough for the women in your life.

  13. I’m certainly hoping to have a good time. I shall attend regardless, and I’m looking forward to properly meeting you!

  14. Hope you are feeling better. That fall sounded terrible!

  15. I’ve been offline a while and am just catching up. Oh, my. I’ve done enough damage to my own lower back to be wincing in sympathy.

I hope you’re feeling better soon.
