New Song: Your Call Is Very Important To Us…

This one came about in a fit of boredom one afternoon. kitanzi and I traded verses back and forth through e-mail until it came together. A bit of polish, and voila, a new song!

I think many people will be able to relate to this one….

Your Call Is Very Important To Us…
by Rob Wynne & Larissa March
TTTO: “Nessie, Come Up” by Dr. J. Robinson
© 2006

The customer sits by his keyboard
He needs to reach tech support
His coffee goes cold
while he’s waiting on hold
Three hours at the last report
The muzak plays soft in the background
As a voice he no longer believes
Says “Each call will be
Answered momentarily
In the order that it was received”

Thank you for holding on still,
For waiting for us so long,
For being polite and holding all night,
Your hope and your faith are so strong!
We thought that you might, we bet we were right,
We see that we weren’t wrong!
Thank you for waiting so, waiting so, waiting so,
Thank you for waiting so long!

He daydreams of a working computer
As the music his thoughts intertwine
He starts to lose hope
He’ll be able to cope
When a cheerful voice comes on the line
He tells her his problem in detail
And all of his details and specs
“Oh, sorry, sir you
Got into the wrong queue
I’ll transfer you, hold just a sec…”

Thank you for holding on still,
For waiting for us so long,
For being polite and holding all night,
Your hope and your faith are so strong!
We thought that you might, we bet we were right,
We see that we weren’t wrong!
Thank you for waiting so, waiting so, waiting so,
Thank you for waiting so long!

The morning sun shines through the window
As he slumps in his chair, fast asleep
The phone in his lap
He succumbed to a nap
And slowly the hours have creeped
A puzzled technician asks three times
“Hello, is there anyone there?”
Then she shrugs and moves on
As he wakes with a yawn
To hear that same tape loop declare…

Thank you for holding on still,
For waiting for us so long,
For being polite and holding all night,
Your hope and your faith are so strong!
We thought that you might, we bet we were right,
We see that we weren’t wrong!
Thank you for waiting so, waiting so, waiting so,
Thank you for waiting so long!

  1. That song is tons of fun!

and that’s a cool marriage ya got there! 🙂

  2. Brilliant. Brilliant. That is all I can say. *giggles*

  3. Oh, man, can I relate. I want to send this to the people at Macromedia.

  4. You do know that’s Dr. *James* Robinson now, yes?

    • Yes, and it caused me some fit of concern as to how to credit the song. So I’ve sent an e-mail to James[1], asking how he’d prefer songs written prior to his taking that name be credited, and when I hear back from him, I’ll edit this post accordingly.

[1] I’d have e-mailed him regardless, as I always try to let people know when I borrow their tunes. 🙂

  5. If you’re looking for ideas for new verses, how about one for the inevitable moment where our hapless hero has to set the phone down for a Call Of Nature or to get a much-needed jolt of caffeine, and THAT is of course the moment in which his call is answered by a human. Who then hangs up, and he gets to start over.

    But yes, a sadly-familiar scenario.

    • There’s always a question of when to end the song. One part of me says “Well, the original song had five verses”, but the truth is, *especially* with a funny song, the song should end when the joke is told. And while I can see various senarios to stretch the joke out, I’m not sure it will serve it that well, so i’ll probably leave it as it is.

Of course, if someone wants to borrow it and add to it, that’s the folk process. But I think making it any longer would lessen it rather than adding to it.

      • I bow to your superior songwriting judgement. (I am strictly a listener, and a fairly ignorant one at that--I am aware of my complete lack of experience at the other end of the process.)

  6. How Do You Spell Relief?

An alternate last chorus popped into my mind --

    Caller, wake up, you’re sleeping.
You’ve waited for me so long.
If you insist, I’ll fade in the mist
Of sleep, and your chance will be gone.
Awake from your sleep, so troubled yet deep.
Your need for relief is strong.
Oh, caller, you’ve waited so, waited so, waited so,
Caller, you’ve slept for too long.

    Ann O.

    • Re: How Do You Spell Relief?

and I briefly debated whether to give the poor guy a break in the end, but decided, ultimately, that it was funnier leaving him, at the end, still in hold limbo. 🙂
