OVFF 2018

Seventeen years ago, I went to my first OVFF. It was a magical experience, and I met many of my dearest friends that weekend, and started a relationship which has become the foundation of my world, so I have a lot of strong feelings about it. I haven’t missed one since, and I was thrilled last year to be asked to serve as Toastmaster for this year’s convention.

I kept trying to figure out a way to write a more comprehensive con-report, but there was so much going on and so many people to see and spend time with (and never enough time with any of you) that I fear leaving something or someone out. But in true awards show fashion, I’m going to try until the orchestra plays me off.

Much thanks to the entire concom for the invitation, to Eric and Lizzie, Julia and Lady J, Cam3, Twill and Osiris of Wreck The System for being an awesome group of folks to share a bill with, and with whom to judge songwriting contests. Thanks to SteveEricaTrace, and Kathryn for late night Pegasus shenanigans. Thank you very much to Bill for the wonderful and humbling words in my program book bio, and for the years of friendship that made it possible.

Special thanks to Steve Macdonald and Merav Hoffman for implausibly last-minute assistance with my concert set. Those last two numbers couldn’t have happened with your help, and they’re both songs I’ve been wanting to do on stage for a long, long time.

My concert set was as follows.

0. The Folsom Connection
1. Anthem (cover)
2. The Madonna of the Midway (cover)
3. A Con Spent In A Circle
4. Thirteen Chord Songs
5. Son of a Son of a Vor Lord
6. Pass the Sage
7. The Ironforge Song
8. Party Of Four
9. Lawyers Guns and Honey
10. The Muppets Take Manhattan

(Lyrics for all songs by me except as noted: “Party of Four”, “Lawyers, Guns, and Honey”, and “The Muppets Take Manhattan” lyrics by myself and Jeff Williams. “Anthem” by Leonard Cohen. “The Madonna Of The Midway” lyrics by John M. Ford, music by Emma Bull. Tunes to all the parodies by their respective original composers; see my website for credits to specific songs. As always, these songs and others I’ve written can be found at https://www.autographedcat.com/songs/)

Thank you to everyone who attended my concert and who told me afterwards they enjoyed it. It was an honour to sing for you.

Thanks to Andrea and Lauren for the late night ice cream run, to Eric Distadand Jen for many long conversations, and to Elise for endless kindness.

Thanks to Kat for unexpected magic.

And finally, always, thanks to Larissa, who is my rock, my foundation, and my partner. You make everything possible.

OVFF 2018 was a blast, and I’m already looking forward to seeing everyone next year.

2012 Pegasus Awards Final Ballot

Hey, what’s that? Why, it’s the final ballot for the 2012 Pegasus Awards! Congratulations to all the nominees!

OVFF Con Report Roundups

As is my custom, I’ve collected all the con reports from OVFF that I can locate in my memories, for both my own benefit and for the community.

A couple of caveats, since this has come up in the past:

  1. I find these by perusing my own friends list. Contrary to popular myth, I don’t actually know every single person in filk (There must be at least 4 people I’m unacquainted with. I’m sure of it. *grin*), and also I’m doing it by hand and it’s easy to miss one. If you know of a report that is not contained on my index, please point me to it.
  2. If an entry I link to is friends-locked such that you cannot see it, you’ll need to discuss that with the journal’s author, not me. I have no control over the locks other people put on their spaces.

That aside, here’s the list so far. I’ll add to it as people point me to more or I see new ones posted.

OVFF 2011 Con Reports

Final 2011 Pegasus Awards Ballot online

Well, the nominations have been counted, and the final ballot has been prepared. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2011 Pegasus Ballot awaits:

http://www.ovff.org/pegasus/2011finalballot.html

And my, what a ballot we have. Perhaps I’m a romantic, but this is one bad-ass ballot. I could not compose a better one, at least not one that would perform as well. Truly, this ballot represents the best filk has to offer, and is destined to be a classic.

All that is left, dear friends, is for you to go and vote. In order to make sure you can evaluate every single song, composer, and performer nominated, sound samples are available right there on the ballot page. So go, listen, and vote your favourites.

OVFF Reports

kitanzi and I are sitting at our gate at the Columbus airport, waiting for our slightly delayed flight to board. We had a fantastic weekend, and I will likely post a more complete report later.

Meanwhile, I’ve been scanning back to try and catch con reports that were made during the convention (laptops and smartphones have made this a much harder process than it was when I started doing it eight years ago!) and will continue to collect them going forward, as I see them. If you know of a report I don’t have on hand, please drop me a note in comments.

Here’s the complete list of reports that I have found.

If you’re inclined towards Twitter, there are a number of entries from the last few days with the hashtag #ovff.

[NB. Due to the nature of friends-locking posts, some entries on this list may not be visible to all persons. Please contact any person whose entry you cannot see directly if you want to find out what they had to say. I apologise in advance for any inconvenience.]

We were filkers once, and young

Well, not *that* young, but…

I mentioned in my last post that I found I still had a large assortment of Gafilk photos to upload. When I actually set about doing this, I was astonished to discover that not only did I have Gafilk photos I had never uploaded, but in fact photos from last year’s OVFF as well. So I’ve gone through them all, cleaned them up a bit, and uploaded them for your enjoyment:

Ohio Valley Filk Festival 2008
Georgia Filk Convention 2009

There are a lot fewer photos from Gafilk this year, because I spent most of the weekend running around putting out little fires, but I did manage to get to a couple of concerts with my camera. (I attended bits of other programming, I just didn’t have the lens with me.)

OVFF

Down and safe

kitanzi and I got home about 2:30pm, and have since been fed and watered.  All is well.  Con report to follow.

As is my habit, I have collected all of the LJ reports regarding OVFF here.  Please link me to any I’ve missed, to create the most complete record possible.  Thanks!

I hate to say goodbye

Last night I got a head start on the traditional post-con melancholy, but I had a fantastic weekend at OVFF.  Currently sitting at the airport waiting for our flight, for which we arrived insanely early (also traditional, but once we were both awake there was no real point in hanging out — cadhla and sweetmusic_27 were both asleep still, and there was no one in the lobby, so we just came on out to the airport, dropped off the car, got through security and found some breakfast.  We should arrive in Atlanta sometime around noon, so we should be home by 2pm or so.

More later.  I love you all.

Home.

Home from OVFF. Fall down now go boom. More later.
