Wow.

Some of you may know cjdoyle as the guy who did the incredible Serenity model out of LEGO™ blocks. I think of him mostly as one of my sweetie aiela‘s friends. Regardless, he’s a nice guy and I’m glad to know him.

So last night, I’m chatting with aiela on IM, and she says, “Did you see the card cjdoyle did of you?” One of cjdoyle‘s current LEGO projects is “The Brick Tarot“, a tarot set using LEGO models. Apparently, I had missed his most recent post, so aiela helpfully gave me the link to

The King of Cups.

Wow. I’m seldom left speechless, but…..wow.

Thanks, Chris!

Go check out the rest of the stuff on his site. He’s done a lot of amazing stuff with plastic bricks!

PSA: Alternate Filknet IRC addresses

Since the message hasn’t gotten out to everyone yet, just a reminder about alternate addresses to reach filknet.org’s IRC server and the #filkhaven channel:

irc.gafilk.org
dorian.altrion.org

These are the US and UK servers, respectively, and connect on the same standard ports.

We are having continuing problems with our Registrar, which is why our DNS is not resolving properly. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Voting

Today is the day we in the US exercise our civic responsibility to go and vote. If you haven’t already, please make the time to do so.

I actually requested and mailed an absentee ballot, so my vote is already taken care of, which is good because today has shaped up to be utterly sucktastic. So far this morning:

-couldn’t find my keys, which turned out to be in my jacket pocket.
-finally got out the door, got the to gas station, couldn’t find credit card
-drove home, couldn’t find card, eventually discovered it in my wallet (?!?)
-noticed on way back out the door giant bolt embedded in tire
-got gas, got to work 20 minutes late.
-will have flat tire by lunchtime, no doubt.
-no idea about lunch now, since plan had been to go home. kitanzi is going to bring me lunch. I have the best wife ever.

Hope your day is going better. And if you’re in the United States, go vote. It’s important.

The Idiot Box

Good lord, I watched a lot of lousy television as a child.

Newsflash: Your Favourite TV Show May Be Fiction

An amusing thread on rec.arts.comics.strips that telynor suggested I share here.

Someone was commenting on the comic strip Broom Hilda not mentioning Halloween, and finding that odd. This led to the following exchange between me and another poster:

Him: “This was covered in the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Actual witches, vampires, demons, etc. tend to distance themselves from the tasteless, commercial mess that mortals have made of Halloween.”

Me: “Most of my Wiccan friends delight in the spectacle of Halloween, while still observing Samhain as a religious holiday, in much the same way that many Christians enjoy the festivities of Christmas without forgetting the spiritual reason for the holiday.”

Him: “That was covered on Buffy as well. Willow refers to Wiccans as “wanna-blessed-be’s”. In the Buffyverse, real witches create time rifts, do battle with gods, flay their enemies alive, try to destroy the world, etc. And that’s just one of the “good” witches, mind you. You don’t want to meet one of the nastier ones.”

Me: “Yes, of course. I keep forgetting how Buffy is a documentary”

Live From New York, It’s The Ghost of a Once Funny Programme…

Tonight, I watched this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live, because Hugh Laurie was hosting and I love Hugh Laurie. I genuinely believe he could make just about anything funny, so I figured, how bad can it be?

Turns out, it can be pretty bad. Laurie himself was good in several sketches, but….I’d known it had gone downhill, but I wasn’t aware it had reached the bottom of the hill, careered off into a deep ravine, and was lying in a flaming wreck at the bottom of mineshaft.

In the immortal words of Opus the Penguin, it “brought the word ‘BAD’ to new levels of badness. Bad acting. Bad effects. Bad everything. [It] just oozed rottenness from every bad scene…Simply bad beyond all infinite dimensions of possible badness. Well, maybe not that bad. But Lord, it wasn’t good.”

I think I need to get me some *old* SNL on DVD. kitanzi says she’s never really understood what the fuss was about, because she never has seen it when it was exceptionally good.

LMAO

I bow to no one as a fan of the late, lamented Firefly, but this video made me laugh hard enough to wake the neighbors

Mosquito

God bless the Internet. (And thanks to filkerdave for the link.)

My Last Word on the Subject

There’s an old joke that goes “There’s two types of people in the world. Those who divide people into two types, and people who don’t.”

I’ve spent the last week veering between despondent and furious.

When you set to create a division, you make your world a smaller place. Even when you do it with the best intentions. Even if you think you’re creating a constructive discussion. Even when you think that what you’re saying doesn’t cast judgment.

You make the world a smaller place. You release into the atmosphere something that is toxic. You destroy something that was precious and beautiful for someone else, without their participation or consent. Just remember, all that poison in the air, that’s your fault.

There’s no Us Vs. Them. There’s only us. There’s only ever been us. There will only ever be us.

All we ever have, in the end, is each other. If you want to make the world a better place, focus on the things that bring us together.

Addendum to new song

Just a brief note that I finally found a title for the song I posted yesterday. 🙂
