Some less consequential thoughts about B5 Season 1

These are really just random musings that struck me as noteworthy, but not enough to put them into the previous post.

  • The non-recurring characters on the show represent a veritable “Who’s Who of Who’s That?”. Nearly every episode, we’d lock onto the principle minor character in the action and say “That person looks familiar.”, and then, looking it up on IMDB, found out they’d appeared in dozens of TV and Film roles, always in a supporting role, and never in a big part — and more interesting, rarely in anything we’d really seen. Sure, there’s a few “big name” guest stars, like David McCallum, David Warner, and June Lockhart, to name just a few, but by and large, they were just career bit parters. I think that’s kinda neat.
  • The guy at the end of the credits has the most annoying voice I’ve ever heard. “Babylon 5 is a production of Babylonian Enterprises and is distributed by Warner Brothers.” How utterly perky. I’m glad they found someone to tone down that tagline for season 2.
  • Am I the only person who, every time Sinclair gravely intoned “The year is 2258. The name of the place is…”, finished the sentence “I Like It Like That”?

    Anyone? No?

    Oh well.

  1. I think the guy at the end of the credits is Harlan Ellison.

    • Really? I’ve heard Harlan speak, and it doens’t sound like him. Was he doing that voice on purpose?

      • Harlan did the voice over for Space Cases.

I’ll ask him about B5 next time he calls.

        • Sure. (To be fair, I may have simply found it annoying becuase we watched so many of them in a short period of time…the repitition alone was enough to make it become irritating 🙂

  2. Am I the only person who, every time Sinclair gravely intoned “The year is 2258. The name of the place is…”, finished the sentence “I Like It Like That”?

    But now I will be…

Especially since I love that song and have been *trying* in vain to get a copy of it.

Add me to the “but now I will!” 😉

      Hee.

You will be MUCH happier when Sheridan comes on board I suspect. I was. he’s… human. And I adore G’Kar. And Londo is tragic but fun and… and… Vir is great and… gosh there are a lot of really fun or cool characters once you get into it.

  3. Season 2 has some episodes which I have a personal interest in the writer.

    • 🙂 I knew there were some coming up. I look forward to seeing them.

Give my best to the writer, please. 🙂

  4. Perpetual guest stars

Gunsmoke is great for that too, i’m finding (they’re reairing it on a local ‘only cheap shows, please, we’re trying to be Nick at Night before Nick at Night stopped being Nick at Night’ station). Also things like a very young Harrison Ford as Third Murderous Bandit From The Left.

  5. “by and large, they were just career bit parters. I think that’s kinda neat.”

It’s also kinda easy on the budget, I suspect.

    “I Like It Like That”

    No, you’re not. 🙂

  6. I Like It Like That

Yes, we did do something like that when SpaceTime Theater did its Babylon 5 parody, A Late Delivery From Broadway, the lost musical episode of the series that never saw broadcast.

But we followed Sheridan’s spoken line by singing the tag: “The name of the place is Babylon 5!”

Sheridan’s day just got worse and worse…
