30 Day Song Challenge – Day 30 – A Song That Reminds You Of Yourself

And here we come to the last song in the 30 day challenge, where we are asked to share a song that reminds us of ourselves. Of all the challenges, this was the easiest song by far to choose. I’ve always said that this was my theme song, and will certainly play over the opening credits of the TV series based on my life, were someone to undertake such a thing. Most people who know me1 can attest to this.

I loved the song when I first heard it, when it was a hit for Men at Work in 1983. But I really love the acoustic versions that Colin Hay performs these days, and there’s a number of really good performances of it floating around, including this one.

If you’ve ever wanted a peak inside my brain, this song will give you one. Here’s Colin Hay, with “Overkill”.

  1. and certainly anyone who’s dated me

Did you see the episode of “Scrubs” where he performed the song?

Anyway…. while Billy Joel’s “The Angry Young Man” would certainly fit, this Gowan song nails it for me. It would run as the opening theme for my TV story. (Without the “walking from A to B” narration.)

  2. Blind Lemming Chiffon

Tough one for me. While internet sources say this song is traditional or by Dave Van Ronk, it was recorded as Jive Man Blues by Frankie “Half-Pint” Jaxon, and noted as such in Van Ronk’s liner notes. https://youtu.be/B40HGmBNOOQ

The song that reminds me of myself would be a medley of these three songs, if such a medley existed:

    My Medley:

    https://youtu.be/WziA88-n02k – Matchbox20 “Unwell”

I’ve been trying not to post more than one song by any artist, but despite having included a Stan Rogers song the other day, I think this needs to go here. Not just a perfect song, but my very favorite rendition of it (from _Home in Halifax_, one of my most played albums). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nu1NTssQ0Bk

I also have a nice acoustic version of Overkill from an XM performance that I heard in studio then later found on Kazaa. It was odd to me when I found out he married Cecilia Noël; she used to be married to the current drummer of Chicago and she got me a back stage pass once because of a mutual friend.

I’ve grown past it now (I hope), but in college this was the song that I thought nailed me. Came out just before I got engaged.

I should do some thinking about what I would pick now. Very possibly a Tim Grimm song.

  7. Dell Christy

This was a hard one for me. There’s no single song that covers all of who I am, so I picked one that shows a piece of me. https://youtu.be/ctRi2K_jIII

  8. Gregory Hardison

That whole solo album “Man at Work” is awesome.

He recently played a show in Seattle, and I didn’t find out about it until it was too late. Still kicking myself.

I can’t find a recording of this, but it is absolutely the anthem of my life. I’ve always said if I ever write an autobiography, this will be the title. 😀

P.S. I’m sorry this challenge is over. I’ve had a great time! Thanks for posting, Rob. <3
